Comment to DM on Instagram: how it works, and how to set one up

You have seen it on a reel. “Comment PLAN and I’ll DM you the link.” A hundred people type PLAN, and every one of them gets a message back within seconds — at two in the morning, while the creator is asleep.

That is comment-to-DM. It is not a growth hack or a grey-market bot: Instagram supports it through its official API, and any Business or Creator account can run it. Here is what actually happens, how to set one up, and the part most people get wrong.

Step by step

Setting one up, start to finish

  1. 01

Switch to a Business or Creator account

Instagram → Settings → Account type. It is free and takes a minute. Personal accounts cannot be connected to any tool, on any platform — that is Instagram’s rule, not a limitation of the software.

  2. 02

    Connect the account

You approve the app on Instagram’s own screen. Leave every permission switched on: each one does a job in sending the reply, and one turned off is a rule that silently never fires.

  3. 03

    Pick a keyword

One word, easy to spell, hard to type by accident. PLAN, PRICE, GUIDE, START. Avoid anything that turns up in ordinary conversation, or you will answer people who were not asking.

  4. 04

    Write the DM

Short. Say what they asked for, attach it, and put one link under it. Two links is a choice, and a choice at 11pm is a person who does neither.

  5. 05

Put the keyword in your caption

Say it plainly — “comment PLAN and I’ll send it over”. Say it in the video too, because most people never read the caption.

  6. 06

    Reply publicly as well

A visible reply under the comment tells everybody else scrolling that the keyword works. That social proof is most of why the next hundred people type it.

Choosing a keyword

Keywords that work, and ones that do not

PLAN, GUIDE, TEMPLATE

Names the thing they get. High intent, because typing it is already a small commitment to reading it.

PRICE, COST

Very high intent and worth answering carefully — this person is deciding whether to book, so the DM should carry the booking link, not a price list.

START, BOOK, SLOT

They are ready. Send them straight to the page with your availability on it.

Anything conversational

YES, ME, HELP, HI. These appear in ordinary comments constantly, and you will DM people who were talking to somebody else.

Long phrases

“SEND ME THE PLAN” gets mistyped, autocorrected and abbreviated. One word survives contact with a phone keyboard.

Emoji only

They travel badly across keyboards and skin-tone variants, and two people typing the “same” emoji often are not.

Common mistakes

Where comment-to-DM usually goes wrong

The DM ends at a link

Sending someone to a page that asks for their email before it hands over the PDF loses most of them at the form. Attach the file to the message instead.

The link goes somewhere that cannot take money

A lead captured at 11pm and a payment collected three days later over WhatsApp are two very different conversion rates. The link should end in a slot and a checkout.

Nobody answers the answer

Some of them write back. It is your inbox and your conversation — the automation sent one message, it did not take over the thread.

The keyword is buried

If it is only in the caption, most viewers never see it. Say it out loud in the video and put it on screen.

One rule for everything

PRICE and GUIDE are different people at different stages. Two rules, two replies, two links.

Questions

Comment to DM, answered

What is comment to DM on Instagram?

It is an automatic direct message sent to anyone who comments a specific word on your post or reel. You choose the keyword and write the message once; from then on, anybody who types that word gets the reply within seconds, whatever time it is.

Is comment-to-DM allowed by Instagram?

Yes, when it runs through Instagram’s official API. You connect a Business or Creator account and approve the app on Instagram’s own screen, and messages only go to people who interacted with you first. Tools that log into your account and act as you are a different thing, and are against Instagram’s terms.

Do I need a Business or Creator account?

Yes. Instagram does not allow this access on a personal account. Switching is free, takes a minute in Settings → Account type, and does not change your followers or your posts.

How fast does the DM go out?

Within seconds of the comment appearing. Speed is most of the value — the person who typed your keyword is still holding their phone, and that is the only moment they are certain to read it.

Can the DM include a PDF or a file?

With Klippme, yes — upload the file once and attach it to the rule, and it arrives as a real file in the conversation rather than as a link to a landing page.

Can it reply to DMs and story replies too, not just comments?

With Klippme, yes. Comments on posts and reels, direct messages, and replies to your stories each trigger their own rules with their own keywords.

How much does comment-to-DM cost?

On Klippme it is part of the Growth plan at ₹499/month plus GST, included in the 7-day free trial, with no separate charge per contact or per message — so a reel that unexpectedly takes off does not produce a bill.

What should the DM actually say?

Three parts: acknowledge what they asked for, attach or link the thing, and give one clear next step. A short message with one link converts better than a long one with three.

Want the DM to end in a paid booking?

Klippme answers the comment, sends the file, and takes the slot and the UPI payment on your own page — comments, DMs and story replies.
